Chapter 18

Vania curled her bare feet beneath her and wolfed down another piece of prime rib. Sitting in panties and nothing else, because Evan and Drake demanded she do so, Vania asked, “When you order steak, the chef always knows you mean prime rib?”

“Yes, I pay him well to know.”

Drake’s eyebrows rose. “Slow down, more’s only a call away.”

She closed her eyes and groaned. “I haven't eaten anything this tasty.”

“Not even in the spa?” Drake teased, pushing away his empty plate.

She opened her eyes and winked at him and Evan. “You had me going there, about your turn.” She finished her potato, scraping the skin to get every morsel. “I didn’t think I would be given recovery time.”

Evan opened his arms wide, glancing at the erection straining his jeans. “I wasn't joking. I’m waiting impatiently for you to gobble down those calories.” His eyes sparkled from the balcony fire, dipping to her naked breasts throughout the meal. “You’re going to need them.”

When she shivered, her breasts jiggled.

But Evan’s face darkened in anger. “Matt’s fingerprints are all over your arms.”

“Not this again,” she pleaded, taking a sip of wine. “We’ve got to move past this.”

“Easier said than done,” Drake said quietly, too quietly.

Evan nodded. “When I saw that asshole grabbing your arms, shaking you until your teeth rattled, it took everything I had not to kill him.”

“By the way Matt looked the next day, I thought you had.”

Drake stayed quiet, but finished his wine in one, oversized gulp.

“I took a walk back in time,” Evan said. “I felt like I was nine again, walking in on my mom covering her bruises with cheap makeup.”

“Oh, Evan.” Vania’s heart sank. “Your father’s doing?”

He nodded.

Drake looked at Evan, and then at her. “My mom’s bruises were needle tracks inside her arms.” He ran his fingertips absently inside one elbow. “She didn’t bother with makeup, none would’ve worked anyway.”

Evan smiled wanly. “Thank God for Gilda.”

Their Aunt Gilda was infamously known as the woman who took in foster kids. Instead of returning them to the system, she adopted and raised the teens as Eastons, giving them firm discipline, an enviable education, and the responsibility to help helm The Easton Company when they’d proven themselves. “I’m told that in your affluent circles, Gilda is known as The Mother of Sarasota.”

“If she is, I wouldn’t know,” Drake said, “but she’s the only mother who counts for me.”

After swallowing her wine, Vania asked, “So how did Gilda meld her family of troubled kids together enough to make it work?”

“Most of us knew each other before Gilda took us on,” Evan explained.

“After my mom overdosed, I was placed in the same support group as Evan.” Drake shook his head. “One for teens prone to violence, well, that’s what the shrinks said.” He shrugged. “I was just angry. Like several of Gilda’s children, my mom was an addict who refused treatment and I didn’t know my father.”

Vania placed her hand on his. “That’s enough to be angry over, even as an adult.
